Math Saves the Worldとは、本校生徒とコロンビアにあるColegio Los Nogalesの生徒たちの10か月に及ぶ協働プロジェクトです。両国の生徒が、SDGs目標７のエネルギー問題を考え、その数値から数学の問題を作成しました。この数学の問題を解くことで、コロンビアと日本のエネルギーに関する歴史背景と現状を知ることができます。現在、数学の問題と解答はColegio Los Nogalesのウェブサイトで公開されています。数学的思考を使いながら、実社会の問題を考える契機になることを期待しています。

Math Saves the Worldは私にとって新しい挑戦でした。まず最初に世界、日本、コロンビアのエネルギーについて私たちMath Saves the World チームが調査をし、次に中学生に解いてもらう為に、データを用いて数学の問題を作成しました。自分だけでなく、中学生が数学を使いながら、エネルギー問題について学べるように工夫をしました。日本とコロンビアのエネルギー資源と常識の違いが大きかったので、コロンビアの学校との話し合いは楽しくて、興味深かったです！
The project Math Saves the World, as a whole, led us to reconsider the problems of energy and sustainability which exist on a global scale. While Japan had less disparities of access to energy between different regions compared to Colombia, we found out that Colombia actually had about 4 times more share of clean energy sources in its energy productions than Japan, making our country well behind global standards of sustainability in our age. We also were very privileged to have an information session with a former Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia, Mr. Mauricio Cárdenas Santamaría, from whom we learned Japan could make a potential significant contribution through its research in the development of hydrogen fuels, which is a clean alternative energy source. Incorporating real-world problems and situations into the classroom is a great way to induce students not just to learn about the world, but also to learn the actual ways in which math is used in order to analyze and draw conclusions from data to reach a solution. We are excited to see how students in our school, too, would find our problems.
今回コロンビアの学校と共同でMath Saves the World というプロジェクトに参加しました。コロンビアとの時差や、双方の予定が合わないなどの問題でなかなかミーティングを設けることはできませんでした。そのような状況でも、コロンビアの学生達の的確な修正と相互の協力のもと、約10ヶ月の活動を経て、Math Saves the World の活動の目標の一つである問題を完成させることができました！この活動を通して自分の国のエネルギー事情について、数学の問題を作るうえでのキーポイントなどを知りました。
